This sounds right to me. To me, the motor plates and ferrite ring do not seem big enough to support a larger diameter gap.
By the way, there is a common (?) misconception that these woofers were manufactured by RCA because their part numbers are RCA 34633 and RCA 33785. They were in fact as you already know, manufactured by Altec. RCA 34633 stood for replacement cone assembly 34633 for future reference for re-coners (is that a word?).....
